Could Electromagnetic Fields Be Affecting Your Health?

Guest blog by Dr. Kristin Moore, DC

It wasn’t until after a family member of mine became sick from a potentially EMF related illness that I began to see a link between our use of electronics and our health. Before that, I never thought twice about having WiFi in my home, or sleeping with my cell phone next to my bed every night. It never occurred to me that using my laptop on my lap could be bad or that putting my phone to my head for hours to catch up with old friends could have negative effects on my brain.

Once I learned about the potential link between our exposure to our electronics and our health, I began to dive into the research. Part of it was therapeutic for me. Doing whatever I could to make sense of a diagnosis that I was heartbroken over. And the other part of it was the mama bear inside of me that wanted to do everything I could to protect my brand new baby boy from any health issue or ailment that could come his way.

Trust me when I say, it is not necessarily a “fun” topic to begin to research. It’s actually really heavy and dark. But it didn’t matter to me because I was so fueled by frustration for never having learned about this before. I have made it my mission to bring this subject to light and to transform it into something that can empower others to take easy and actionable steps towards reducing their exposure to EMFs.

So how do EMFs actually deplete our health? There has been extensive research done by Dr. Martin Pall on this very subject. It turns out that when we are exposed to EMF radiation (from things like cell phones, computers, WiFi, bluetooth enable devices, etc) it can affect us on a cellular level and create large amounts of oxidative stress (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3780531/). And at high concentrations, oxidative stress can play a major part in the development of chronic diseases (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3614697/).

Now what does all of that mean? It means that our over exposure to our electronics plays a role in our disease state. Don’t get me wrong, there are tons of other variables that contribute as well (diet, toxic load, viruses, mold exposure, and the list could go on and on) but this is the one piece that we haven’t looked at yet. It’s the one that no one is talking about.

I know what you are going to say next…. “but, I can’t live without my phone!!”. And trust me when I say, I don’t expect you to get rid of it. I myself am a technology user. Technology has offered me access to information that I never would have had before, allowed me to connect with and meet people that I never would have been able to meet, and it has offered a great deal of convenience to my very busy and hectic life. That being said, I believe that we can use our technology in a more mindful manner that still allows us to have the convenience yet it significantly cuts down on our exposure.

Here are my top tips to begin to reduce your EMF exposure:

  1. Keep all of your electronics off your body. The further they are from you, the less radiation your body will be exposed to.
  2. Don’t sleep with your electronics. Make your bedroom a technology free zone keep them outside of your room so you do not get extra exposure while you are sleeping and not using them.
  3. Turn your WiFi off before you go to bed. If you are sleeping, then you certainly aren’t going to be streaming movies or doing anything of that nature, so is there really a point to keeping it on all night long? Absolutely not!

About Dr. Kristin Moore, DC

As a chiropractor and natural minded health practitioner, I have always been interested in the chemicals and toxins that we are exposed to regularly that could be depleting our health. However, it wasn’t until a family member grew ill from a potentially EMF related issue that I became fully aware of the negative health impacts that EMFs can have. When I started diving into the research, I learned about how wide-spread the effects truly are and that hardly any of us have even been asking the question, “could my electronics be impacting my health?” I have made it my mission to educate others on the harmful effects of EMFs and to empower people to make simple and easy changes that can make a huge difference in their exposure and potentially make a difference in their overall health as well.

Dr. Kristin – Such a great article! I’m really curious what the symptoms and sickness was and how you and your family learned it might have stemmed from EMF? How did you know what was linked to EMF sickness?
I have 2 young girls and I stopped using the baby monitor completely when my 2nd was born 2 years ago!
